New York City

I have a confession.

Until about 8 years ago, visiting New York City never even crossed my mind!
I didn’t see myself as the sophisticated and cosmopolitan type who could manage the Big City. I pictured New York as too big, noisy, crowded, scary, and overwhelming.

But out of the blue, my best pal Shirley and I got the itch to see what NYC was all about. After countless hours of research and planning, off we went … and truly had the time of our lives!

We saw a Broadway play, shopped, dined, shopped, explored, shopped, wandered, got caught in a downpour in Central Park, went to a jazz club, stopped for dessert at 2am, breezed into our hotel at 3am! We figured out the subways, learned to hail a cab, and walked and walked and walked. When it was time to go, I literally sobbed in the cab on the way back to LaGuardia!

Since that first trip I have been back to New York City many, many times — with girlfriends, with my husband, with my son, my daughter, and even by myself. And now here I am, creating an entire website devoted to Big City Fun for Women!

New York City is a fabulous destination for women travelers!

  • It boasts an endless variety of big-city activities to interest any of us who enjoy world-class art, culture, theatre, shopping, sightseeing, dining, nightlife, people-watching, neighborhood wandering, and exploring.
  • New York is reasonably safe if you use the same common sense caution you would in any large city. Crime has decreased dramatically over the past 15 years or so.
  • New York is actually much smaller and more manageable than you might think.
Manhattan (where you will spend most or all of your time) is only 13 ½ miles long and 2 ½ miles wide.
  • It’s very walkable, and has good public transportation. You can easily get anywhere you need to go on foot or by subway, taxi, or bus.
  • Women – alone, in pairs, or in groups – are prevalent and accepted in New York City. You should feel comfortable in most restaurants, bars, nightclubs, hotels – really just about anywhere.

(One caveat: If you are looking for a budget getaway, New York may not be your best choice! I suppose it’s possible, and there are some good ways to cut costs, but a few days in the Big Apple will still take a good-sized bite out of your wallet.)
