Books
For decent basic shopping information, try any comprehensive NYC guidebook, like Fodor’s, Frommers, Access, etc.

Four terrific books which are especially focused on shopping are:

Born To Shop New York by Suzy Gershman. For 20 years, Suzy’s books have been required reading for NYC shoppers. Fun, chatty, informative. Covers fashion, home furnishings, specialty shops, gifts, bath and beauty, flea markets, antiques and arts, and more.
Where to Wear New York published by Fairchild and Gallagher. Terrific purse-sized guide devoted to apparel. Cross-referenced by category and neighborhood, and includes excellent walking maps.
Where To Find It, Buy It, Eat It in New York by Gerry Frank. Comprehensive shopping listings in every imaginable category; it is also an excellent general reference book for NYC. At 581 pages it is too big to carry around, but peruse it before you go, jot down some notes, and keep it in your hotel room.
Zagat Survey: New York City Shopping by Zagat Survey. From the same folks who brought us the Zagat Survey for restaurants. Easy-to-use, purse-sized NYC shopping guide, covering a wide variety merchandise: apparel, home furnishings, garden, hardware, art supplies, gifts, and much more. Cross-referenced and indexed by location, merchandise, and special features (avant-garde, celebrity clientele, cool loos, hip/hot places, etc). Good maps.

www.artseensoho.com Cool site with a variety of SoHo-specific info, including store listings and an interactive map.
www.citidex.com Yellow-pages style online directory for New York City. Not the most snazzy-looking site, but chock-full of information.
www.clothingline.com Website for a store in the garment district which holds frequent sample sales for a variety of merchandisers.
www.dailycandy.com Sample sale alerts, articles, newsletters.
www.newyork.citysearch.com ** (Lipstick Getaways Favorite) One of the better general NYC sites with lots of good shopping info. You can search by category and neighborhood.
www.nymag.com ** (Lipstick Getaways Favorite) Another favorite all-around NYC info sites that includes plenty of shopping info.
www.topbutton.com Sample sales and more. You have to register but it’s free.
