New York City
New York City is a fabulous destination for women travelers!
-
It boasts an endless variety of big-city activities.
World-class art, culture, theatre, shopping, sightseeing, dining, nightlife, people-watching, neighborhood wandering, and exploring.
-
The shopping, of course!
-
The city is reasonably safe if you use the same common sense caution you would in any large city.
Crime has decreased dramatically over the past 15 years or so.
-
New York City is actually much smaller and more manageable than you might think.
Manhattan is only 13 ½ miles long and 2 ½ miles wide; much of your time will probably be spent in just a small portion of that.
-
Getting around is so easy! Most of the city is easy to navigate, very walkable, and has good public transportation.
You can easily get anywhere you need to go on foot or by subway, taxi, or bus.
-
Women – alone, in pairs, or in groups – are prevalent and accepted in New York City.
You will feel comfortable in most restaurants, bars, nightclubs, hotels, strolling down the street – really just about anywhere.

I have a confession …
Until about 8 years ago, visiting New York City never even crossed my mind! I imagined the city as big, noisy, crowded, scary, and overwhelming. But then somehow, my best pal Shirley and I got the itch to see what NYC was all about … and truly had the time of our lives!
We saw a Broadway play, shopped, dined, shopped, explored, wandered, got caught in a downpour in Central Park, went to a jazz club, stopped for dessert at 2am, breezed into our hotel at 3am! We figured out the subways, learned to hail a cab, and walked and walked and walked. (When it was time to go, I literally sobbed in the cab on the way back to LaGuardia!)
Since that first trip I have been back to New York City many, many times — with girlfriends, with my husband, with my son, my daughter, and even by myself. In fact, my NYC experiences triggered my desire to create Lipstick Getaways — an online resource to help other women plan their getaway!
