Atlanta

There is plenty of big city fun for women in Atlanta!

Fantastic dining, fabulous shopping, a wide variety of performing arts, more shopping, history, culture, a beautiful park and botanical garden, as well as attractions such as The Georgia Aquarium, CNN Studios, Centennial Olympic Park, and more.

However, because Atlanta is so sprawled out, and public transportation is pretty good but limited — it can be challenging to get to the fun in Atlanta.

Here at Lipstick Getaways, we try to avoid renting a car and driving around an unfamiliar city (too stressful and a real buzzkill!). So I look for cities with decent public transportation, and good walking neighborhoods.

  • While Atlanta does possess a decent subway system — the MARTA — service is limited to one north-south line and one east-west line. So it’s not like New York or Chicago, where you can zip around just about anywhere by public transit.

MARTA provides service to the airport, to many of the most popular downtown and midtown attractions, and out to Buckhead. While you can easily fill a long getaway weekend visiting just those places served by MARTA, we did find that there are several fun Atlanta destinations which are difficult to visit without a car, or taking a bus or taxi.

  • And because Atlanta is so sprawled out, it’s not a great walking city. One exception: the lovely nearby town of Decatur, which is both delightfully walkable AND easily accessible by MARTA.

So, I’ve taken the “getting around Atlanta” challenge into account here.

  • I’ll suggest which neighborhood you should stay in, based on your interests.
  • I’ll tell you which fun stuff which is easily accessible by subway, and/or by the complimentary shuttles provided by most hotels in Buckhead (I’ve made extensive use of this service!)
  • I’ll toss in a few worthwhile activities for which you might have to spring for a taxi — unless you are lucky enough to be visiting friends who can drive you around.
